Maximizing Your Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit: The Power of Product Identification Numbers (PINs)

Date:

Treasury, IRS request public comments on product identification number requirement to claim the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit.

Are you making the most of the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit? Starting in 2025, a crucial factor in claiming this credit is the Product Identification Number (PIN) requirement for certain eligible products.

The Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service are seeking public comments on this new requirement, and your input can shape the upcoming regulations.

To qualify for the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, certain products must now be accompanied by a qualified Product Identification Number, signifying their compliance with energy efficiency standards.

This PIN will play a pivotal role in claiming the credit and maximizing your tax benefits for qualified expenditures, such as

  • Energy efficiency improvements,
  • Residential energy property expenditures, and
  • Home energy audits.

The credit is allowed for qualifying property placed in service on or after Jan.1, 2023, and before Jan. 1, 2033.

Beginning on Jan. 1, 2025, taxpayers claiming the credit must also satisfy the PIN requirement for certain categories of products. Under this requirement, an item will only qualify for the energy efficient home improvement credit if the item is produced by a qualified manufacturer, and if the taxpayer includes the qualified PIN of the item on their tax return.

Your voice matters in this significant development. The Treasury and IRS are actively seeking input regarding the PIN requirement.

Your insights can influence the upcoming regulations and shape the future of energy-efficient home improvements.

You can Download the Notice Notice 2024-13 for Request for Comments on Product Identification Numbers and the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit under Section 25C.
