California’s Minimum Wage Hike Hits $16, But Pasadena Workers Already Feeling Flush

Date:

California’s Minimum Wage Hike Hits $16: California’s hourly minimum wage reaching $16.00 has been a significant milestone for the state, impacting workers across various industries. However, Pasadena, among other cities, has set even higher standards, setting itself apart with its unique wage trajectory and community-led ordinances.

In a notable move ushering in the new year, California has seen a considerable change in its hourly minimum wage, increasing it to $16.00. This increase marks the culmination of a broader legislative plan that commenced in 2017 with an hourly rate of $10 and has now reached its peak in 2024.

While this adjustment affects the entire state, certain cities, including Pasadena, have implemented their own wage standards that exceed the statewide mandate.

Notably, Fast Food Restaurant employers will need to adhere to the revised minimum wage from April 1, 2024, while Healthcare Facility employers will implement the increase from June 1, 2024, thereby ensuring higher compensation standards in these sectors.

Pasadena, in particular, has taken proactive measures by establishing its own minimum wage ordinances, starting in 2016 and gradually increasing wages every July 1.

This commitment continued until 2020 when the hourly rate reached $15. Subsequently, in July 2022, the minimum wage in Pasadena saw a further increase from $16.11 to $16.93.

Lisa Derderian, Public Information Officer, emphasized the city’s community-driven approach to these decisions, highlighting strong support from various groups, including labor organizations and low-wage earners. The recent increase was calculated using the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the Los Angeles/Long Beach/Riverside area.

Of particular note, while the statewide minimum wage has risen to $16.00 on January 1, 2024, this increase does not extend to L.A. County, which experienced its own rise to $16.90 on July 1, 2023.

As the wage landscape evolves, Pasadena’s distinct path shines a light on the pivotal role of local initiatives in shaping economic policies and ensuring equitable compensation for workers.

This exceptional journey demonstrates Pasadena’s commitment to fair wages and its proactive response to economic fluctuations, setting a compelling example for other cities and emphasizing the importance of community-driven ordinances in shaping a fair and just labor landscape.
